Automated Clock
AutomatedClock is a project that ticks away the time on a Google Sheet. In this work, six users manipulate their respective cells within a Google Sheet to keep time in real time. This is made possible through Google Sheet's collaborative editing feature.
Perhaps the most significant feature of Google Sheets is this collaborative capability. Simply by sharing a URL, everyone can gather on a single sheet and work together in real time. Even without conversation, participating editors can look at the movements of other participants' cells, infer their intentions, and carry out their own tasks. We naturally sense the intent of someone across the internet through the movement of those cells.
This work is a project where six users manipulate cells on a Google Sheet to mark the passage of time. Needless to say, these six users are automated programs. Even so, don't you find yourself sensing a human intention in the rhythmic disruptions created by internet latency, or in the way they move?
